Alvin and the Chipmunks

Alvin and the Chipmunks have been around for quite some time, they’ve been around for about six decades. It was back in 2009 when the first cinematic iteration of them came to screen and a whole new generation was introduced to these furry little friends. There were then sequels in 2009 and 2011. Each subsequent film did worse than the other in terms of box office success and critical reception. The newest movie may have had some of the trimmings of being a cash grab but it does have its moments of being a decently compelling film for its intended audience.

Alvin and the Chipmunks had to come out in the theaters as the same day that Star Wars the Force Awakens came out. This movie isn’t going to just be the highest grossing movie of the year but of all time even surpassing films like Avatar.. Here are some of the things that that worked in the film. The comedy is directed for kids as it features talking animals. The jokes are directed at children so this is a movie where you are going to see a lot of parents bringing their young ones to watch and enjoy. Aside from the minor comedic value it offers there is also the music that some may find entertaining, if their idea of entertaining music is high-pitched chipmunk sounds.

Many of the songs in the film are new pop hits done in the trademarked sound of the chipmunk voice. These are catchy songs that have made it big and could prove to be fun for people watching the movie.

The plot of this story spells trouble for the chipmunks as usual. The group of little creatures travels across the country to get to Miami. After being told about their guardian or “father will be leaving them after he gets married, Alvin, Simon and Theodore come up with an idea to stop him from proposing to his girlfriend Shira. If this marriage goes through then their new stepbrother would be her teenage son Miles who doesn’t treat them right.

The antagonist of this is a crazed air marshal who has a grudge against Alvin and the gang who puts them on a no-fly list and then chases them across the country. As per usual they get into a lot of situations that stops them on their journey before eventually heading all the way out to Florida to confront Dave. It’s a simple plot that could have been solved in a few minute conversations but as per usual there would be no story if that were the case. The budget of this film was at around $90 million and by the start of 2016 only grossed $93.1 million. The factors behind this point to a overused and unfulfilling plot and facing one of the most hyped and great movies in the past couple years. There was truly no way to compete with Star Wars which brought all movie goers to go and see it and bring him costumers who usually never go to the movies to see it.
