I have been a fan of the Wayans brothers since “In Living Color.” That is what really opened me up to being a fan of movies making fun of other movies, and using their plots for a whole different meaning. The Wayans brothers have always been hilarious to me. I love “Don’t be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood.” It is one of the first from them that really got me into the Scary Movie series. I will say that by the Scary Movie series, I only mean the first and second Scary Movie. I can even say that I was pleasantly surprised by Marlon Wayans in the “A Haunted House” movies, the first one being the best one. I will even say that “White Chicks” made me chuckle a few times. So, what about my thoughts on “50 Shades of Black”? Here are a few of my likes and dislikes of the film:
The Acting – This was hard for me. I specifically was not a fan of the woman’s role of Hannah, her voice was hard to stomach, maybe because she was trying to sound like the actress in “50 Shades of Grey.” Overall, it didn’t work well for me and I kept thinking how bad her voice sounded during the movie.
Trying Too Hard – I think for the most part, all of the actors were trying too hard to be funny. This made it hard to follow, as in the past, the jokes or the script flowed a lot better and led to other humorous situations.
Focused on one movie – In most of the other movies that the Wayans brothers produced, they had one plot that the focused primarily on, however they would often branch off to other jokes about movies. For instance, in the first Scary Movie, they would reference TV Shows like Dawson’s Creek for example, with Dawson being on the wrong set. In “50 Shades of Black,” only a few movies were referenced, but not enough to notice.
Seemed Rushed – The whole movie seemed like it was put together so quickly. I feel that they could have done a better job in some parts of the movie that would have made it more enjoyable to the audience.
Typical Wayans If you know anything about the Wayans, they love joking about anything and everything. Especially dirty things. This is what I was most expecting, and I was happy to see that their humor in that aspect was alive and well in this film. Marlon’s humor is relatively the same as it has always been in previous films which was refreshing.
One-Liners – The one-liners in this film were great and made the movie. Some of these one-liners were subtle, but if you listen closely, you’ll see that these were a great part of the film.
While I love what the Wayans brothers have done in the past, I’m not sure that I would recommend seeing this film in the theater. This is probably best as a Redbox rental. I only suggest this if you are a Wayans brothers fan at all, if not, I wouldn’t suggest it at all.
